DESCRIPTION

The district lies on the top of the hills that from the hinterland of Fermo’s territory facing the border of Macerata’s territory and covers an area that includes the municipalities of Massa Fermana, Falerone, Monte Vidon Corrado, Servigliano and Montappone. The core business lies between the towns of Montappone and Massa Fermana where work over 80% of the companies, whose specialty is the interweaving of straw and the production and packaging of straw hats; it was accompanied by the making of hats of all shapes and material, for man, woman and child.
Local companies are also specialized in the processing of other accessories for clothing, including gloves, scarves and shawls as well as promotional items.
Montappone is the most important European district in this area; the ancient handcrafted manufacturing of the straw hat originates from the farmers of the hills of Fermo’s territory, who started to weave the reaped stems of wheat to convert them into headgear and it has evolved over the years in large-scale production.
