DESCRIPTION

The complex of Frasassi caves is one of the most magnificent and fascinating underground routes in the world. The Caves are the largest underground complex in Europe, which runs through the heart of the Regional Natural Park of the Red Gorge and Frasassi.
These caves were formed about 1 million 400 thousand years ago, when the stream Sentino, creeping between the faults of the mountain, encountered the mineralized water returning from the bottom, eroding the permeable rock. The regression of the coastline and the continuing orogenic pressures, which raised the Apennines, increased the erosive action of the main waterways, which expanded their catch basin.
The caves were discovered by chance by the CAI Speleological Group of Ancona in 1971 and from that time are the subject of studies and researches with surprising outcome, although it must be said, however, that already in 1948 there were the first cavers and geologists in the area of Frasassi and to follow with the discovery in 1966 of the Speleological Group of Fabriano that found inside the River Cave further branch, the length of over one kilometre.
The largest cave is the Great Cave of the Wind (13 Km).
There are several routes you can do inside, ranging from a purely tourist route, so easy thanks to the presence of easy walkways, to a purely speleological route, divided by degree of difficulty of distance.
